After years of delay, work has finally gained momentum on Mira-Bhayandar’s first multi-speciality hospital, a long-awaited project expected to transform healthcare access for the city’s 15 lakh residents.

The state-of-the-art facility is coming up in the Kanakia area of Mira Road and will be the first to be operated directly by the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). Officials estimate the 14-storey hospital will be ready within the next three years.

Spread across 3.5 lakh sq. ft., the hospital will house 377 beds, including 55 ICU beds and 22 emergency care beds, along with 11 modular operation theatres. Advanced diagnostic services such as digital X-ray, CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, bone DEXA scan, pathology lab, blood bank, and mammography will be available, alongside a modern botics-enabled medical facilities.

The state government has agreed to provide funding for medical equipment and furnishings. The project is being executed under the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) model by a private developer, ensuring MBMC incurs no construction costs. However, the civic body will shoulder the responsibility of running and managing the hospital once it becomes operational.

Local leaders see this as a potential turning point. Former corporator Omprakash Agarwal (Garodia) recalled that the earlier Tembha Hospital functioned like a small clinic until it was handed over to the state due to MBMC’s lack of funds. He emphasized that if MBMC successfully runs this new hospital, it will truly benefit Mira-Bhayandar residents.

Currently, the city relies on two public hospitals—Indira Gandhi Hospital, which primarily manages maternity and OPD cases, and Tembha Hospital, now state-run. Due to limited facilities and long waiting lists, patients often travel to Mumbai’s BMC hospitals or turn to private nursing homes, which are unaffordable for many.

To strengthen sustainability, MBMC also plans to establish a paramedical college on a PPP model within the same complex. Commissioner Radhabinod Sharma stressed that while construction costs are covered, long-term success will depend on efficient administration and planning.
